According to the WHO Global TB Report 2023, 825,000 people were treated for rifampicin resistant/multidrug resistant tuberculosis (RR/MDR-TB) between 2018 and 2022, a figure that only represented 55% of the target set for that period. As innovations emerge to tackle this challenge, it is essential that communities, advocates, and civil society organizations (CSOs) stay informed and equipped to benefit from these resources effectively. Within the Unitaid funded ASCENT DR-TB project, we work with the communities for improving treatment literacy and strengthening community partnerships.
The landscape of tools recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) for the diagnosis, treatment, care, and support of people with drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB) is constantly evolving. To better understand this, Treatment Action Group (TAG) has launched a series of virtual trainings designed to empower community advocates with the latest knowledge and tools in DR-TB care.
These sessions aim to bridge the gap between policy updates and on-the-ground implementation by providing key interest-holders with accessible, up-to-date information. The first session launched on July 25, 2024 focusing on DR-TB basics. See the recording below:
Beyond knowledge-sharing, these trainings align with ASCENT DR-TB‘s broader commitment to community partnerships. Through this TAG led activity, community structures are supported to raise awareness, enhance treatment literacy among people with TB (PwTB), and advocate for accessible, person-centered care. By strengthening local advocacy efforts, TAG supports DR-TB affected communities in playing a central role in shaping local responses to DR-TB and influencing policies that directly impact their lives.
ASCENT DR-TB also complements ongoing efforts to advance community-led initiatives, reinforcing the vital role of civil society in the challenging landscape of DR-TB management. By equipping advocates with the right tools and knowledge, ASCENT DR-TB Consortium contributes to a stronger, more informed movement supporting countries to uptake the new, shorter and better DR-TB regimens.
